Ayurveda, the world’s oldest comprehensive health care system, is the Science of Life or Wisdom of Daily Living that has been practiced in India for 6000 years. It is considered the “sister science” to Yoga and is one of the most recognized and widely practiced disciplines of alternative medicine in the West. It imparts wisdom on how to live in balance with oneself and the environment and a profound philosophy that conjoins “Mind, Body, Spirit” as a framework for Holistic Health and Wellness, that is a practical knowledge of self-healing that anyone can learn

In this workshop we will explore and experience:

  • The ABC’s of Ayurveda as a framework for Holistic Health
  • Discover your body type (Ayurvedic Constitution or dosha)
  • Learn appropriate practices and daily routine for your body type
  • Discover practical applications of Ayurveda for Yoga
  • Learn the profound philosophy Ayurveda shares with Yoga
  • Learn how Ayurveda supports Yoga practice by understanding the attributes of the mind (gunas), and energies of the body (viryas), and how they effect and balance your constitution (doshas) and the levels of your being (koshas)
  • Explore the application of Ayurveda for organizing an appropriate yoga practice to balance body, mind and spirit and move forward in life with grace and ease.

Ayurvedic Consultations address overall health and well being, as well as alleviate long standing issues and imbalances. Your Ayurvedic constitution will be determined and appropriate recommendations such as daily routines, lifestyle adaptations, including diet, herbs, and exercise (yoga) will be made.

Chaya is available at The Peaceful Center for Ayurvedic Consultations on November 1.

Solstice Yoga Retreat with Chaya
December 21-24, 2008

at Kripalu Center, Stockbridge, Massachusetts • www.kripalu.org • 800.741.7353

The winter solstice is celebrated in many ancient and modern cultures as a time of purification, rebirth, rededication, and a return to the light. Astronomically, it marks the date when the days begin to lengthen and nights grow shorter. The winter solstice is especially meaningful to Chaya, whose Sanskrit name means “the shadow.” The word “chaya” is popularly associated with worshipping the sun, the illuminator of the world and the purveyor of good health.

This retreat with Chaya will include:
• daily practice of yoga, breathwork, and meditation
• yoga nidra and other deep relaxation practices
• chanting and sacred rituals
• exploration and integration
• time for fun and reflection

Chaya specializes in adaptive yoga, emphasizing awareness of breath and sensation in each moment rather than how far you can go, making this retreat appropriate for all levels. Come experience the rhythms and laws of nature in a yoga workshop that will support you in deepening your practice, resetting your internal clock, celebrating the sun, and rekindling the light of spirit within you.

Workshops & Lectures: General Information
Additional programs facilitated by Chaya~Sharon Heller BA, IYT, LMT, AYC

Ayurveda – The Science of Daily Living: Ayurveda, the mother of all healing arts and practical knowledge of self-healing, comes from ancient India. Millions of people use its systems today to live a healthy lifestyle. In this workshop we will look to these ancient principles to explore our health and well-being, in considering our relationship to self and the environment.

Ayurveda and the Intuition of Digestion & Ayurveda and the Wisdom of the Mind: Ayurveda, Sanskrit for "Science of Life," is a traditional East Indian medical system known for promoting healing and maintaining optimal health. Its ancient therapies offer timeless solutions to attain balance of mind, body and spirit. Discover the secrets to a calm, peaceful and healthy life based on your individual constitutional balance. Learn the secret to self-empowerment for lifelong health, inner radiance and outer beauty.

Ayurvedic Cooking for Daily Living: Join Chaya for a fun and educational cooking experience and learn how to use this ancient science of life as a framework for holistic health and wellness. Pre-requisite: Attendance at a lecture on Ayurvedic Living or an Ayurvedic consult with Chaya.

The Body and Beyond: Gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between Yoga and Holistic Lifestyle. Gain deeper perspective of “body, mind and spirit”, through the study of the Koshas, -a framework for reflection, study, and integration.

Core Stabilization: Awaken and experience your core. Learn the purpose and benefits of core stabilization as a foundation for safe yoga practice and everyday life activities. Through the experience of physical groundedness and core strength, one can often feel a deep sense of empowerment and emotional strength, calming the mind and emotions, offering clarity and spaciousness for the wisdom of the body to be heard, resulting in deeper intuition, peace and ease of well-being.
All levels of experience are welcome.

Balancing the Spine – Yoga for Scoliosis and Postural Asymmetries:
Kyphosis is the excessive rounding of the thoracic spine, which also contracts the chest; Lordosis is the excessive arching of the lumbar spine, or swayback, which also tilts the pelvis; Scoliosis implies a lateral curving and rotation of the spine, ribs and pelvis. Asymmetrical musculature, and/or muscular imbalance, a high hip and/or shoulder, unequal waist or gluteal folds, lateral head tilt, protruding scapula, as well as neurological changes-all may be evidence of a scoliosis. Symptoms may or may not include back/hip pain and/or burning sensations, difficulty breathing, strong one-sidedness or stiffness, poor posture with decrease in height.

In this workshop you will learn how Yoga can nourish and balance all the systems of the body, mind and spirit, gain a deeper understanding of your physical, energetic, emotional, and intuitive bodies and their interconnectedness. Through lecture, movement, breath, and guided relaxation, you will learn how to practice Yoga safely, what to avoid, what to include and ways to adapt practices to balance your spine and yourself. Increase physical harmony, energy, strength and flexibility, as well as better posture, breathing and deeper relaxation.

Respite Time – The Essence of Shabbat and Yoga – Respite Time is an opportunity to move ourselves beyond the world we live in for a glimpse of the world we want to live in. Ghandi reminded us to become the change we wish. Shabbat, an ancient Jewish weekly celebration is a sacred period of respite, of stepping back from the way things are in order to allow ourselves to daringly envision the way we would like things to be, for ourselves, our relationships, our work, our world. This enriching and empowering experience is filtered through the venues of yoga, meditation, story, wisdom and chant…

Come be inspired by the weekly torah portion Vayigash, as a focus for our attention as we look into the essence of Patanjali’s 8 Limbs of Yoga that is inherent in the Jewish Traditional prayer services.

Aryeh Kaplan in his book Jewish Meditation, speaks about the 4 steps that are clearly demonstrated in the traditional Jewish Service; Action, Speech, Thought, and Nothingness, which correspond to the 8 Limb’s of Yoga.
We will learn and experience Action-attuning to our body with yoga postures and body scanning. Speech-consciousness of breath, which is the bridge through which we integrate our koshas (body, mind, spirit). Thought- where we grasp the power of the divine, through focused attention, concentration and deep relaxation. Nothingness, when thought is turned off it is the ineffable experience of the divine. The realm of pure experience is beyond thought, meditation.

We can observe these steps daily and the Torah and Patanjali say that this level of practice is still not enough. Through the observance of Shabbat; stepping away from our lives as they are during the week, creates the space and opportunity for deeper connection to the divine. These are the building blocks of our personal holy temple, the fusion of matter and essence of our own life, and the renewal of the unconditional bond between G-d and creation, our body and soul and our soul to the universe. We will experience Shabbat and sanctify our mind, hearts and behavior so they form a conduit through which this G-dly essence may permeate our entire being, refreshing and renewing our faith and providing us the energy to integrate body, mind and spirit, transcending us to move beyond the world we live in to become the change we wish. Together we will use the practice of Yoga and the essence of Judaism to merge our individual consciousness with universal consciousness for a graceful Shabbat experience, signifying unity, peace and freedom.
