| Reflections
on a Program Well Received
Last
week I taught the first ever Yoga and Tap Dance Program at Kripalu
Center, called Tap Dancing for Your Soul. It
was an amazing experience for me and the program participants.
Tap
Dancing for Your Soul presented an opportunity for me to honor
all of the teachers who have inspired and supported me, as well
as the masters who have laid down the foundations and the footprints
for us to follow. The combination of Yoga and Tap dance, though
unorthodox, created a sense of euphoric unity within the group,
and I invite those who were initially skeptical of this combination
(and there were a few people who were) to re-educate themselves
and learn what is it that made this program so wildly successful.
These two rich lineages and disciplines command respect on their
own—and when combined, we were all witness to their power
to purify, nurture and nourish the souls of everyone participating.
I will say that many of the participants arrived with an agenda
and their own expectations, but by the end of the program they had
let go and surrendered to the love and joy of connecting to their
souls, connecting to each other, the music, the mirror and the chance
to dance!
Since
the end of the program, a little over a week ago, I have received
about a dozen emails from participants who are continuing to live
in the spirit they found. One woman bought tap shoes for her 8-year-old
son and got the whole family in the act, as her note of Bramacharya
(energy management and moderation) hangs on her computer. Another
will take a ferry ride once a week to get to a not-so-local tap
class, and yet another is purchasing new every-day shoes with a
leather soul so she can tap while waiting on lines and in her daily
routine. And finally, another participant found healing from a serious
health condition and recent surgeries by having the most fun she
has had in a year.
The
students are also communicating with each other, sharing the written
steps and the music we danced to in a continuation of their tap
enthusiasm and in an effort to continue to practice.
Here’s
what the participants had to say about this program:
Thanks
so much for being a wonderful teacher!
Thank you for reminding me to live life lightly in order to choreograph
our human experiences with grace and ease.
Moving to music unleashed the Goddess within. Yeah!
I feel inspired!
